The Australian Open 2011 Women’s Singles title will be contested by Belgium’s Kim Clijsters and China’s Li Na. This is a milestone for Li Na since she became the first Chinese woman (male or female) to have reached a Grand Slam singles final. The world number 11 defeated top-seeded and top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki in three tight sets, even having faced and saved a match point against her Danish opponent.
Meanwhile, Clijsters had a relatively easy game to the final, having defeated world number two Vera Zvonareva in straight sets. Clijsters’ victory means that she will overtake Zvonareva as world number two in next week’s rankings.
