Open GDF Suez 2011: Petra Kvitova beats Kim Clijsters to clinch Paris title

Czech tennis star Petra Kvitova upset newly-crowned world number one Kim Clijsters in the title match of the Open GDF Suez 2011, a Premier-level tournament that just took place in Paris.

By virtue of reaching the semifinals, Clijsters already assured herself of the top ranking once the points are tallied by Monday. However, as stated in earlier interviews, the Belgian was determined to clinch the title. The score was 6-4, 6-3.

Kvitova, currently ranked 18th in the world, has posted impressive wins the past year. The Paris title is her biggest to date and her ranking is expected to rise by Monday.

The Open GDF Suez 2011 tournament is co-directed now by former world number one Amelie Mauresmo.
