Sony Ericsson Open: Mardy Fish earns US number one ranking

By reaching the semifinals of the Sony Ericsson Open, Mardy Fish is the new number one men’s tennis player in the United States. However, he is quick to stress that he’s still far from emulating the feat of his good friend.

Fish defeated sixth-seeded David Ferrer in straight sets on Wednesday to reach the Miami Masters semifinal. His ranking is projected to rise to a career high 11th by next week. His good friend Andy Roddick, the tournament’s defending champion, will drop from eighth to 14th after losing his opening match in Key Biscayne.

“I don’t think I would ever feel like I was the No. 1 American. Andy has had a pretty good career. You can put his career on top of mine about six times. He’s always going to be the top dog in my generation,” Fish said.

Fish is the only American left to contest the Sony Ericsson Open title this weekend. He will face the winner of the Novak Djokovic-Kevin Anderson match for a spot in the finals.
