German Julia Goerges beats world number one to win Stuttgart title

World number one Caroline Wozniacki was the heavy favorite to win her fourth title of the year at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix 2011 in Stuttgart, Germany. However, the title wasn’t meant to be hers this year after Germany’s Julia Goerges powered her way against her to win this Premier WTA tournament. The score was 76 63.

Despite recording the less number of errors, Wozniacki trailed in terms of winners with only 9 (Goerges at 38).

Goerges became the second German player to win this tournament (first was Anke Huber – 1991, 1994).

“I had goosebumps at match point. It was an unbelievable feeling playing the final with so many people watching,” Goerges said.

“Everything was going so well but you can never be sure against Caroline. She has turned lots of matches around when nobody expected her to. She is only beaten when the last point is over,” she added.

Aside from the cash prize money, Goerges also got a brand new Porsche 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet.

The doubles title was won by Germany’s Sabine Lisicki and Australia’s Samantha Stosur.
