Maria Sharapova donates $250,000 to Chernobyl relief

Former world number one Maria Sharapova donated $250,000 to the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) which makes it possible for the latter to expand its sports and other programs for the youth residing in three countries that were affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. The tragedy occurred on April 26, 1986.

The three-time Grand Slam champion has been an active supporter of the cause. Her family had fled one of the affected areas of the Chernobyl accident back then.

“Today, while the anniversary is filled with sadness, we also acknowledge that this is a time for hope, as we move forward in building a better future for all those whose lives have been changed by this tragedy,” said Sharapova in a video message released last weekend.

Sharapova has been a UNDP Goodwill Ambassador since 2007 and has donated a total of $750,000 so far to the cause.
