Roger Federer returns home to regroup in time for Mutua Madrid Open

A surprise exit at the quarterfinals of the ongoing Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters means that Roger Federer will have an earlier flight home to Switzerland in order to regroup in time for his next scheduled tournament: the Mutua Madrid Open, another ATP 1000 claycourt tournament that will take place in the home country of rival Rafael Nadal.

“I’ll be back in Switzerland training on clay. Hopefully the weather is going to be okay so I get some chances to hit outdoors. I’m looking forward to going back home,” Federer said.

His loss to Jurgen Melzer of Austria on Friday will serve as his fifth this season. He has so far won one title in 2011, the Qatar Open.

“It’s always disappointing regardless against who you lose,” the Swiss star said.

Federer is a three-time Monte Carlo Masters finalist. All three of these title-match losses were to Nadal.
