Nikolay Davydenko captures 21st ATP title in Munich

Former world number three Nikolay Davydenko will return to the world’s top thirty in this week’s rankings after winning his 21st career ATP World Tour title in Munich, Germany. The Russian defeated German number one Florian Mayer 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 in the final of the BMW Open on Sunday.

Aside from winning €68,850 and acquiring 250 ranking points, Davydenko also received two business class tickets to South Africa and a brand new BMW 1 Series convertible. The Russian also won the Munich title in 2004.

“In finals I just feel stronger, more relaxed, my confidence is very high and I just go out there fighting. It was a very important result here (to return to the Top 30) and I’m just so happy,” Davydenko said.

A fractured left wrist earlier last season prevented Davydenko to compete at his best and his ranking dropped to as low as number 40.
