Petra Kvitova wins Mutua Madrid Open 2011 title

Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova completed her fairytale run at the Mutua Madrid Open 2011 by winning the women’s singles title after beating Victoria Azarenka of Belarus in straight sets 7-6, 6-4. The 21-year old tennis star will make her debut in the world’s top 10 once the new rankings are released on Monday.

The 16th seeded player produced several winners to lead 3-0 in the first set before Azarenka rallied back to level the score at 303. However, Kvitova’s 40 winners against Azarenka’s 10 ultimately sealed the Czech player’s victory. This is her biggest title to date.
Azarenka won’t be leaving Madrid empty-handed since she won the women’s doubles final with Russia’s Maria Kirilenko. She will also become world number 4 on Monday, the highest ranking ever achieved by a female tennis player in Belarus (previous record was no. 5 by Natasha Zvereva).

“Petra had such a great week and totally deserved to win today,” Azarenka said after the match.

“I wish her good luck the rest of the season. This is a great event and we all love coming here – the crowd is great and I hope to see you all next year,” she added.
