Defending French Open champion Francesca Schiavone of Italy beat 10th-seeded Serbian Jelena Jankovic 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 on Sunday to reach the quarterfinals.
The fifth-seeded Italian broke Jankovic’s serve to lead 5-4 in the last set and eventually served it out to victory. She’s now just three matches away from winning the French Open back-to-back.
Schiavone holds the distinction of being the only Italian female player to win a Grand Slam title. Her next opponent is Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
Jankovic is a former world number one who had reached the Roland Garros semifinals thrice in the past four years.
