Roland Garros 2011: Francesca Schiavone prepares to defend women’s singles title

World number five Francesca Schiavone knows that there’s a lot at stake at the Roland Garros 2011 tournament which begins on Sunday, May 22.

For one, she’s the defending champion which means there’s pressure for her to do well in the second Slam event of the season. Second, failure to do so would mean losing significant ranking points which could boot her out of the world’s top ten.

Despite the aforementioned challenges, the 30-year old Italian said that she’s rather focus on trying to win one match at a time.

“I’ve tried not to think about it too much as I’m focusing on preparing my defence but I love entertaining the public and, of course, I’m going to France to try to win,” Schiavone said in an interview with Reuters.

The Italian was seeded 17th last year and unexpectedly made her way to the women’s singles final, beating Australia’s Samantha Stosur to lift her first career Grand Slam singles trophy.
