Roland Garros 2011: Frenchman Gael Monfils keeps French Open title bid alive

Frenchman Gael Monfils progressed to the French Open 2011 quarterfinals after beating claycourt specialist David Ferrer of Spain in five sets 6-4, 2-6, 7-5, 1-6, 8-6. The Monfils vs Ferrer fourth round match took place on Sunday but had to be carried over the next day due to darkness.

Monfils is aiming to be the first local player to win the French Open title since Yannick Noah in 1983. His win over Ferrer is his 200th career victory. His next opponent is Roger Federer where he trails in head-to-head series 1-5. By virtue of reaching the quarterfinals, Monfils is projected to rise to number 8 once the new ranking data is released next week.
