Roland Garros 2011: Novak Djokovic gets extra rest as Fognini withdraws from quarterfinal match

World number two Novak Djokovic booked his place at the French Open 2011 semifinals without breaking a sweat after his scheduled opponent, Fabio Fognini, announced on Monday that he won’t be able to play because of injury.

The Novak Djokovic vs Fabio Fognini quarterfinal match was scheduled on Tuesday.

“I have a little problem with my left leg so I have to retire,” Fognini told a news conference.

“My doctors said if I play tomorrow maybe it can be dangerous,” he added.

Fognini revealed that he has not recovered from a thigh injury he sustained after a dramatic five-set win over Albert Montanes of Spain.

After finding out that his opponent won’t be playing, Novak Djokovic tweeted: “Walkover from Fognini. Bad luck for him,hope he recovers fast. Today i get to enjoy Paris in a different way :-)”
