Fourth-seeded Victoria Azarenka of Belarus reached her second career French Open quarterfinals after beating Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova 6-2, 6-3. She matched her final eight finish two years ago. As the highest-seeded player left in the women’s draw, she has become a strong contender for the Grand Slam title.
In order to reach the semifinals, Azarenka has to get past China’s Li Na, who reached the quarterfinals after beating Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic.
