Birmingham 2011: Germany’s Sabine Lisicki beats Hantuchova to win second WTA title

Sabine Lisicki made a remarkable comeback in the women’s tour by winning the Aegon Classic 2011 in Birmingham on Monday. The German player, who’s ranking dipped to more than two hundred last year after recovering from a long injury, beat fourth-seeded Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia in straight sets. Just like what happened in Queen’s Club, the final match of this tournament was moved on Monday due to rain delays.

The title win marked the 21-year old’s second career tour victory in the WTA tour. Her first title was in Charleston way back in 2007.

“I am in disbelief. I am shaking. It’s an amazing week. At the start of it, I never thought I would be standing here today. The comeback from injury was so difficult. It means so much to me,” Lisicki said.

Lisicki received a wild card entry in next week’s Wimbledon Championships.
