Rafael Nadal remains world number one after Roland Garros 2011 win

World number one Rafael Nadal retained the top ranking this week following his successful defense of the Roland Garros title in Paris on Sunday. The Spaniard defeated long-time rival Roger Federer to remain a perfect record against his Swiss opponent in their five meetings at the French Open.

Nadal’s lead over Novak Djokovic of Serbia has been reduced to 45 points with Nadal retaining 12,070 points while Djokovic, thanks to his semifinal run in the tournament, is now at 12,025.

Djokovic would have become world number one if he reached the final but was stopped by Federer in the semifinals. The Serbian star, who went on a 43-0 win streak, would have also gotten the top ranking if Nadal failed to defend the Roland Garros title.
