Serena Williams must answer questions on mental toughness

Even a casual fan would tell you that most sports have a huge psychological aspect to them and the nature of tennis means it’s perhaps even truer for the game that pits two players against each other in a battle of wits.

This makes it even more surprising that one of the world’s top players, Serena Williams, has aired her disappointment at the courts she’s had to play on so far at Wimbledon this year.

Her and her sister Venus found themselves out on Court Two for their opening matches, while the big guns in the men’s game were took centre stage on the show courts.

Serena didn’t offer her thoughts on why this situation has arisen, but the implication is that she feels the best women players are treated worse than their male counterparts.
She may have a point here, but the fact that she felt the need to go public with her comments while the tournament is still going on suggests that her focus may not be as sharp as it could be and those looking to bet on US Open tennis should remember this.

Given recent events in her life, most notably the medical complications which almost ended it, this wouldn’t be surprising and it does raise the question as to whether she is in the sort of place mentally that she needs to be in order to win Grand Slams. The tennis US Open betting indicates she will go close, but does she still have that extra edge needed?
