Wimbledon 2011: Czech Petra Kvitova beats Pironkova to match last year’s semifinal feat

Czech star Petra Kvitova reached the Wimbledon semifinals for the second year in a row after beating Bulgaria’s Tsvetana Pironkova (a semifinalist last year) in the quarterfinals held at All England Club Court One.

Pironkova made waves this week after beating higher-ranked and more accomplished players such as no. 2 Vera Zvonareva and five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams to reach the final eight.

Kvitova was a surprise semifinalist last year and her impressive results this 2011 season earned her a place in the world’s top ten rankings. By reaching the semifinals, she successfully defended the massive ranking points she earned from reaching the same stage last year.

Kvitova will play against the winner of the Tamira Paszek vs Victoria Azarenka quarterfinal match.
