Wimbledon 2011: Sharapova earns semifinal berth after beating Cibulkova

Russia’s Maria Sharapova advanced to the semifinals of the 2011 Wimbledon Championships after routing Slovakian opponent Dominika Cibulkova in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 at the All England Club Centre Court. This is her first time since 2006 to reach this stage at The Championships.

Sharapova is the only former Grand Slam champion remaining in the final eight and seemed headed to emulate her Wimbledon victory in 2004.

“It’s been a few years since I got past the fourth round, and now I’m in the semifinals. So this a great chance for me to take it a step further,” Sharapova said.

Her next opponent is German wildcard Sabine Lisicki.
