Wimbledon 2011: Venus Williams aims for more Olympic glory

Five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams is still aiming for more Olympic glory, shrugging off rumors that she will soon be retiring from tennis. In a recent interview, the 7-time Grand Slam champion said that she hopes to play in a “few more” Olympic Games before she hangs her tennis racquet.

The former top-ranked player is now in the fourth round of the grasscourt Slam event after beating Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez of Spain in straight sets. Williams almost lost in the second round against Japanese veteran Kimiko Date-Krumm.

Though the 31-year old tennis star won’t confirm if she’d still be competing on tour when she reaches 40 (just like Date-Krumm), she said that her focus right now is next year’s London Olympics. The tennis competition will be held at Wimbledon, arguably her favorite tournament.

“I’m not sure what lies in the future for me. I tend to base all my goals around the Olympics nowadays, it seems. I hope to have a few more Olympics left in me,” Williams was quoted as saying.

Venus Williams is the most successful female tennis player in Olympics. She won three gold medals – one for singles and two for doubles.
