Wimbledon 2011: Wildcard Sabine Lisicki continues fairytale run, reaches semifinals

German wildcard Sabine Lisicki reached her first Grand Slam semifinal at the 2011 Wimbledon Championships after beating 2007 finalist Marion Bartoli in three sets 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 at the All England Club Centre Court.

Lisicki, who reached the quarterfinals at the grasscourt Slam in 2009, has had a challenging 2010 season where she had to deal with injuries which saw her ranking drop outside 200. However, her comeback this season has been remarkable, highlighted by her victory at a warm-up tournament prior to Wimbledon and her semifinal showing here so far.

I cannot explain how I feel at the moment. It was just such a tough road back and it’s so wonderful to be standing on Centre Court in Wimbledon which I love so much. I’m just so happy,” Lisicki said.

Lisicki is the first German since Steffi Graf in 1999 to reach a Grand Slam semifinal.
