Czech Petra Kvitova wins Wimbledon 2011 Ladies Singles Title

World number eight Petra Kvitova of Czech Republic won the Wimbledon 2011 Ladies Singles title on Saturday after beating fifth-seeded Maria Sharapova of Russia in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. This is Kvitova’s first career Grand Slam title and she also became the first Czech player since Jana Novotna in 1998 to win a Grand Slam title. Sharapova is the 2004 Wimbledon champion.

Kvitova looked composed as she served for the match but admitted during the on court interview afterwards that she was as nervous and excited as her coaches who were on the verge of celebrating at that time. On winning the title, Kvitova said:

“It’s hard to find some words, I’m so happy that I won.”

Kvitova’s ranking points are expected to increase once the new data comes out on Monday (projected to rise to no. 7) since she improved on her semifinal finish last year. The same goes for Maria Sharapova who was ousted in the fourth round in 2010. However, Sharapova’s expected to remain in no. 6.
