Gilles Simon wins 2011 German Tennis Championships

Frenchman Gilles Simon is making his way back in the world’s top ten after winning the ATP 500 German Tennis Championships, beating Spain’s Nicolas Almagro 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. The title win propelled Simon’s ranking from no. 17 to no. 11. His career high ranking was no. 6.

Simon became the first Frenchman to win this claycourt event since Henri Leconte 25 years ago.

“Today, the final was really hard to win. I had to play my best tennis to win and I’m proud to win this tournament,” he added.

Simon will receive €230,000 and 500 ranking points.
