Mardy Fish defends Atlanta Tennis Championships title

World number 9 Mardy Fish of the United States successfully defended the Atlanta Tennis Championships title after beating compatriot John Isner in the final. Fish was at the verge of defeat but managed to save two match points in the second set to force a decider. He won with the score of 3-6, 7-6, 6-2.

“When you’re in that position, it’s almost over,” Fish said. “I was lucky to get out of it. I played some good points. I don’t think he missed any first serves there. I stuck some returns and put some balls in play.”
Isner was attempting to win two consecutive events for the first time in his career. He won a grasscourt event in Newport two weeks ago. Fish was able to achieve the feat last year – winning the Newport-Atlanta tournaments.

This is the sixth career ATP title for Fish. He currently leads the 2011 Olympus US Open Series standings with 70 points.
