Medina Garrigues wins fifth Palermo Open title

Spain’s Anabel Medina Garrigues is back in the tennis limelight once more after winning her fifth Palermo Open title on Sunday after beating Slovenia’s Polona Hercog 6-3, 6-2.

The 28-year-old Spanish veteran clinched her 11th career title, 10 of them on clay. This made Medina Garrigues the record holder for most number of claycourt titles among active players, overtaking Venus Williams (9).

The fifth-seeded Spaniard won the Palermo Open tournament in 2001 and from 2004 to 2006.
Seventh-seeded Hercog, who won the Swedish Open last week, saw her nine-match win streak end in the final. On the brighter side, her ranking is expected to rise again on Monday.
