Wimbledon 2011: Novak Djokovic clinches world number one ranking, reaches final

Serbia’s Novak Djokovic progressed to the final of the Wimbledon 2011 tournament after beating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France 7-6, 6-2, 6-7, 6-3 in the semifinals. With this significant victory, Djokovic finally clinched the world number one ranking and will overtake Rafael Nadal in next week’s rankings.

Djokovic was a semifinalist at last year’s Wimbledon and reaching the final means additional points will be added to his current ranking of 12005. Nadal’s total points stand at 12070 and won’t increase even if he successfully defends the Wimbledon title.

“It’s difficult to put into words, it’s one of the best feelings I’ve ever had on the tennis court. My dreams are coming true, a first final at Wimbledon,” Djokovic said in a televised interview.
“I’m just going to celebrate and take some time but there is another match to come. I’ve been working all my life for this. I’ve been dreaming of this since I started playing tennis when I was four,” he added.

Djokovic had the chance to overtake Nadal in the world rankings in last month’s Roland Garros but fell short after losing to Roger Federer in the semifinals.

Djokovic will play against the winner of the Rafael Nadal vs Andy Murray Wimbledon Semifinal match.
