2011 Farmers Classic: Ernests Gulbis ends Fish’s win-streak to win title

Latvian tennis star Ernests Gulbis won the 2011 Farmers Classic title after beating American Mardy Fish 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. Fish was aiming to win his second consecutive title.

“It’s just a huge boost in confidence,” said Gulbis.

“I lost trust in myself that I can compete with the best guys. I knew it, but I was up and down. Mardy is a great player, and to beat him, now I’ve got my confidence back.”
Gulbis entered the tournament on a five-match losing streak. To reach the final, he had to beat the likes of former champion Juan Martin del Potro.

Despite the loss, Fish said he’s still satisfied with this performance this week. His ranking is expected to move up to number 8 once the list is updated on Monday.
