Cincinnati Open 2011: Serena Williams withdraws due to injury

After winning her first round match at the 2011 Cincinnati Open, tournament officials announced that Serena Williams of United States has pulled out of the scheduled second round match against Samantha Stosur of Australia today due to right toe injury.

Williams and Stosur last played on Sunday at the final of the Rogers Cup which the former won to capture her second title out of only four tournaments played this season.
The former world number one was sidelined for 49 weeks and returned during to competition during the grasscourt season. Her ranking dropped out of the top 100 after failing to defend the Wimbledon title. However, after winning two consecutive hardcourt events (Stanford, Toronto), her ranking rose to no. 31 and is now expected to get a seeding at the US Open 2011 tournament, to begin later this month.
