Dinara Safina ends 2011 season due to back injury

Former world no. 1 Dinara Safina announced that she won’t be competing for the rest of the 2011 season due to persistent back injury.

“I’m sorry to report that my back is still acting up and I will not be able to play until at least the end of the year,” Safina said on her official website.

“I don’t know how long my time out is going to last because I don’t want to torture myself and my body anymore,” she added.

The Russian tennis star began the season with three consecutive first round match defeats. In April, she showed signs of progress after reaching the semifinals of a claycourt tournament in Morocco.
She has not played since May of this year and this caused her ranking to drop to world no. 68.
