Novak Djokovic makes historic Masters 1000 title win at Rogers Cup – Montreal

World number one Novak Djokovic became the first player to win five ATP Masters 1000 titles in a single season after beating Mardy Fish 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 in the Rogers Cup final in Montreal on Sunday.

The Montreal Masters event was Djokovic’s first tournament since he became world number in July after winning the Wimbledon title.

“History making, of course it’s special… Of course, it’s an honour and privilege to be part of the history of the sport that I love and that I play,” Djokovic said.

Meanwhile, Fish said that he missed several opportunities to close out the match considering that he managed to bring it to a decider.
“I felt like I had an opportunity today, I really did. I had a lot of chances in that first set, ended up losing 6-2 early. If you try to forget who you’re playing against, you’re just playing another player, maybe you can figure out a way to get a break or two there. I had a lot of shots early in that first set on my racquet that I’d like to have back,” Fish said.

Djokovic is now 53-1 this season with his only loss taking place at the Roland Garros semifinals against Roger Federer.

His other Masters 1000 titles this season include Indian Wells, Miami, Rome and Madrid. He already amassed 9 titles this season including two Grand Slam titles.
