Serena Williams returns to world’s top 80 after Stanford win

After winning her first title of the season, Serena Williams’ ranking rose 90 places from 169th to 79th on Monday. The 13-time Grand Slam champion won the 2011 Bank of the West Classic title after beating Frenchwoman Marion Bartoli.

Williams was sidelined for nearly a year after injuring her foot after winning the 2010 Wimbledon title. She made her comeback last June by participating in two grasscourt events, including Wimbledon. Her failure to defend the Wimbledon title led to a slump in rankings but her title win at the hardcourt event is an indication that she’s a heavy favorite to win the US Open 2011 title.
The former world number one will be seen next at the Rogers Cup 2011 tournament in Toronto which begins on August 8.
