Serena Williams wins 2011 Rogers Cup title

In just her fourth tournament of the season, Serena Williams was the last woman standing among a strong field of contenders at the 2011 Rogers Cup tournament in Toronto, beating Australia’s Samantha Stosur 6-4, 6-2. Two weeks ago, williams won the Stanford tournament. With the victory on Sunday, she strongly positioned herself as the strongest contender at the 2011 US Open which will take place later this month in New York.

“Being down the way I’ve been down and coming back, it was cool. Eight months ago if there was only one tournament I wanted to win, it was Toronto,” Williams said.
“For whatever reason, I really wanted to win this event. So seeing it come true is really cool. Just going through so much and being able to win is even more amazing,” she added.

Serena Williams was ranked 80th entering the tournament but with the title win, she catapulted to 31st. Should she make a deep run at the Cincinnati Open this week, it is most likely that she’ll be back in the world’s top 20.
