The 2011 US Open Women’s Singles event is nearing its conclusion with the quarterfinal matches already contested on Thursday. One of the biggest surprises of the tournament was Germany’s Angelique Kerber. The 92nd-ranked player beat 26th-seeded Flavia Pennetta of Italy 6-4, 4-6, 6-3.
Kerber has never made it past a third round of a Grand Slam. In the other quarterfinal match, Samantha Stosur of Australia beat second-seeded Vera Zvonareva to reach her first US Open semifinal. Zvonareva was a runner up in this tournament last year while Stosur reached her first Grand Slam final in last year’s French Open.
