US Open 2011: Roger Federer reaches quarterfinals, faces Tsonga next

Five-time US Open champion Roger Federer reached the quarterfinals of this year’s hardcourt slam in New York after thumping Juan Monaco of Argentina 6-1, 6-2, 6-0.

The match started shortly before midnight but the spectators needed less than 90 minutes to watch the encounter.

“It’s happened often to me that I’ve had to wait a long time,” said Federer, referring to the schedule.

“I had to wait maybe two hours more than usual. It is quite crazy how our schedules change all the time as tennis players and it makes it extremely difficult to be on your A-game every single day,” he added.

Federer, a 16-time Grand Slam champion, is aiming for his 6th US Open title and his performance against Monaco may just signal that he has a great chance to do so.
“I’m extremely pleased with my reaction out there. I played really well and I felt fantastic. From the baseline I had the upperhand the whole time. In the three main areas of the game I was superior, and that made the outcome pretty straightforward,” the former world no. 1 player said.

The Swiss star will next face Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France in the quarterfinals. It was Tsonga who beat Federer at the Wimbledon 2011 quarterfinals.
