2011 Kremlin Cup: Cibulkova wins maiden WTA crown

Dominika Cibulkova of Slovak Republic won her first career WTA title at the Premier-level Kremlin Cup in Moscow on Sunday. The eighth-seeded star beat Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi 3-6, 7-6, 7-5 in two hours and 36 minutes.

Cibulkova is one of the two top 20 players on women’s tour this season to not have won a WTA title, having gone 0-3 in her past WTA finals appearances. However, she was at her best this week, having overpowered higher-ranked opponents such as Vera Zvonareva.

“This is the best feeling I’ve ever had. It’s the best day for me,” Cibulkova said.

“I’ve been waiting for my first WTA title for so long. It’s also special because I had so many tough moments, against Zvonareva in the quarterfinals and against Kaia today. It didn’t come easily. I really had to fight for my first title,” she added.
