2011 Stockholm Open: Monfils claims first title of season

World number ten Gael Monfils increased his chances of qualifying for the year-end Barclays ATP World Tour Finals by winning the ATP 250 IF Stockholm Open title on Sunday. The Frenchman, ranked 14th in the year-to-date rankings, beat Jarkko Nieminen 7-5, 3-6, 6-2.

“My concentration was the key for me today. I just believed I could win this match,” Monfils said.

“Jarkko was playing good when he was in front. Some spots in the match were high level tennis and he was moving well. At the end I think he got a bit fatigued. I played him three weeks ago [in Bangkok] but I was more impressed with him today,” he added.

This is Monfils’ fourth career ATP title.
