Andy Murray successfully defends Shanghai Masters title

Andy Murray won the 2011 Shanghai Masters title on Sunday after beating third-seeded David Ferrer 7-5, 6-4. This is Murray’s third title in three weeks in the Asian leg of ATP tournaments.

By successfully defending the Shanghai Masters title, Murray will overtake Roger Federer in the world rankings on Monday. Murray will become world number three while Federer will be ranked outside of the world’s top three for the first time since July 7, 2003.

Murray has won 25 out of his past 26 matches. He won the PTT Thailand Open and the Japan Open Tennis Championships and the Shanghai Masters title.

“It’s been one of the best runs of my life,” said Murray.
“I’ve played very, very well the last few weeks. I was very nervous today because I wanted to win here and defend my title. I’m very happy to come through. Ferrer’s one of the toughest players on the tour and one of the best people; it’s a pleasure to share the court with him. I love playing here; it’s one of my favourite places to play,” he added.
