Marat Safin to run for Russian parliament seat

Former world number one and two-time Grand Slam champion Marat Safin said that he’s up for election to the State Duma parliament on December 4, 2011. If he’s successful, he’ll be one of the Russian sports stars who’ll be part of the lower house of parliament.

“I am an intelligent guy and I have a lot to bring and a lot of ideas about things and what to do,” Safin said.

“I am very committed to it,” he added.

The 31-year old tennis star retired from professional tennis in 2009. Since then, he’s been working with the Russian tennis federation and has become a valuable member of the Russian Olympic committee. He’s also an active player at the ATP Champions Tour.
