Czech Republic wins 2011 Fed Cup title, first since 1988

The Czech Republic clinched its first Fed Cup title in more than two decades on Sunday after doubles team Lucie Hradecka and Kveta Peschke beat Elena Vesnina and Maria Kirilenko of Russia 6-4, 6-2 in the decisive doubles match to secure a tight 3-2 win in the final.

Czech world number two Petra Kvitova contributed to the team’s victory, having won her two singles matches.

“Petra won two points, but we needed one more,” Czech captain Petr Pala was quoted as saying.

“I’m glad we’ve managed to (get) the third one. We all won it because victory is made of small pieces you have to put together. It’s team work,” he added.

Kvitova is unbeaten in her six Fed Cup matches this season. Prior to the final, the world number two has won back to back titles in Linz and the prestigious year-end WTA Championships that was held in Istanbul, Turkey.
