German qualifier wins first WTA title in Hobart

German qualifier Mona Barthel won her first career WTA title after beating top-seeded Yanina Wickmayer at the Moorilla Hobart International tournament on Saturday. Barthel completed her surprising run in the tournament, having to go through qualifying rounds and overpowering three seeded players to reach the final.

The German’s performance against Wickmayer was impressive, posting a 6-1, 6-2 win.

“I was a little bit surprised at the score, but I played a really good match today and she made some easy mistakes,” Barthel said.

“I made only a few mistakes and put a lot of pressure on her. I also think I served well, not just today but throughout the week. It helped me a lot, especially in the tough moments,” she added.

Barthel is expected to crack the world’s top 50 for the first time with the title win.
