For the 27th time, 16-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer will play against 10-time Slam winner Rafael Nadal. This time at the semifinals of the 2012 Australian Open tournament. The two tennis greats have always been in the opposite sides of the Grand Slam draw since Roland Garros 2005 which means that they can only play against each other in the final should they manage to defeat their opponents in the first six rounds. The blockbuster Australian Open 2012 semifinal match was made possible after they’ve eliminated their quarterfinal opponents on Tuesday. Federer defeated Juan Martin del Potro in straight sets while Nadal outlasted Tomas Berdych in four sets.
Nadal leads the head-to-head series record against Federer with 17-9. Their last recorded match was at the ATP World Tour Finals in November last year wherein Federer won in the round robin stage. The Swiss star went on to successfully defend the title.
