Serena Williams pulls out of 2012 Monterrey Open tournament

Former top-ranked Serena Williams has pulled out of this week’s Monterrey Open because of an ankle injury.

The WTA has reportedly informed the tournament organizers about the withdrawal on Saturday. Williams did not accept the wild-card invitation because she’s still recovering from the injury she sustained earlier this year at a tournament in Brisbane, Australia.

Williams went on to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open and also won her two singles matches at the Fed Cup earlier this month against Belarus.
