Andy Murray lauds Roland Garros prize money increase

World number four Andy Murray lauded the Roland Garros organizers for increasing the prize money for this year’s claycourt Grand Slam tournament proportionately. He expressed his optimism that other Grand Slams will follow suit.

The French Open organizers said that the overall prize money total for this year will be $24.6 million with the men’s and women’s singles champions each receiving $1.64 million – an increase of 4.17 percent.

The distribution of the prize money increases was made proportional with those beaten during earlier rounds getting bigger increases. First round losers will get $23,670 – up from $19,700 last year.

The organizers said that more than three hundred players who lose from qualifying to third round of the main draw competition will notice the prize money increase between ten to twenty percent.
