Roland Garros 2012 French Open: Prize money increases by 7 percent

The prize money at the 2012 French Open has increased significantly this year and what’s great about this, in most players’ perspective, is that it will benefit all the participants.

The Roland Garros 2012 organizers revealed that the overall prize money is now set at $24.6 million, around 7 percent higher from last year. The men’s and women’s singles champions will each get $1.64 million – an increase of 4.17 percent.

The distribution of the prize money increases was made proportional with those beaten during earlier rounds getting bigger increases. First round losers will get $23,670 – up from $19,700 last year.

The organizers said that more than three hundred players who lose from qualifying to third round of the main draw competition will notice the prize money increase between ten to twenty percent.

The move was made following complaints given by players at the Australian Open 2012 tournament after they noticed that the distribution was deemed unfair.
