The claycourt season is now in full swing with its first major event – the Monte Carlo Masters 2012 tournament in Monaco. The first of three Masters-level claycourt events has a total financial commitment of € 2,744,225. Seven-time defending champion Rafael Nadal is back this year and will aim to keep off his opponents from wrenching the crown from him. He’ll face tougher competition this year as world number one Novak Djokovic of Serbia is slated to participate this year. Djokovic currently holds a seven-match winning streak against Nadal. World number three Roger Federer, who reached the quarterfinals last year, has opted to skip the event.
