French Open 2012: Roger Federer sets Grand Slam milestone at Roland Garros

Roger Federer continues to break records set by tennis greats due to his impressive longevity and competitiveness in the sport in the age of 30. On Monday at the 2012 Roland Garros tournament, Federer tied Jimmy Connors’ record for most Grand Slam match wins (233) after the 2009 French Open champion beat Tobias Kamke of Germany 6-2, 7-5, 6-3.

Federer is competing at his 52nd Grand Slam event and is now 233-35 lifetime at the major events. He also won his 50th match (50-12) at the Roland Garros.

“It’s a big record, because that was longevity,” said Federer.

“Jimmy is obviously one of the greats of all time, and was around for 20 years. I love the big tournaments. I have been so successful for such a long time and to already tie that record, which is 30 years old is pretty incredible, so I’m very happy,” he added.

Connors’ record of total number of titles won at 109 might seem a far-fetched idea for Federer to overtake. The Swiss tennis superstar currently has 74 titles to date. However, with his current fitness and competitiveness, he may have a shot in doing so.

“He had 109 career victories, I’m at 74 now,” Federer said.

“Is it possible for me to equal Connors’ titles? 110, that would be a round figure. That would be incredible. But that’s a dream. I go year after year, and we’ll see,” he ended.
