Kim Clijsters to retire after US Open 2012 tournament

Any hopes of her changing her mind is now down the drain. For former top-ranked tennis star Kim Clijsters, she’s had enough tennis and will now once more retire from the sport she loved. The well-liked Belgian announced that this year will be her last season and that she will officially retire after the 2012 US Open, a hardcourt Slam tournament she’s won three times.

Clijsters said that retiring after the US Open is the best time since this is where she’s enjoyed her greatest triumphs. When the Belgian retired in 2007, she’s only had one Grand Slam singles title (US Open 2005) on her roster but after her major comeback in 2009, she’s won additional three Grand Slam titles including the 2009 and 2010 US Open plus the 2011 Australian Open.

Clijsters will be skipping the entire claycourt season including the 2012 Roland Garros due to hip injury and will make her return during the grasscourt season, a perfect time for her to warm up for the Wimbledon 2012 tournament and the Olympics tennis tournament which will be held in Wimbledon as well.
