The top two seeds of the 2012 Rome Masters – the Internazionali BNL d’Italia tournament have made it through to the final to set up a rematch from last year’s event. Top-ranked Novak Djokovic, the defending champion, faces five-time Rome champion Rafael Nadal in a blockbuster final. It wasn’t an easy road for the duo to reach this far in this event and had to face criticisms following their early exits in last week’s Madrid Masters.
With a title win, Djokovic will clinch his 12th ATP Masters 1000-level title and closes his gap against the achievements of both Nadal and Roger Federer (the two players have already amassed 20 ATP Masters 1000-level trophies each). On the other hand, Nadal will win his 21st ATP Masters 1000-level title should he defeat the Serbian star on Sunday – another record-setting milestone for the Spaniard.
Nadal currently leads the overall head-to-head series against Djokovic at 17-14. He’ll reclaim the world number two ranking if he wins the title tonight.
