The AEGON Classic in Birmingham is one of the two grasscourt tournaments that take place a day after the men’s singles final in Roland Garros is concluded and this quick transition from clay to grasscourts will certainly pose a challenge to our WTA stars. However, this is a necessary warm-up tournament for the Wimbledon Championships 2012 which begins in less than two weeks time.
Headlining this event is defending champion Sabine Lisicki of Germany, who made a fantastic run at the grasscourt season last year after reaching the semifinals of the Wimbledon championships for the first time. Also included in the draw are last year’s runner-up Daniela Hantuchova, Francesca Schiavone and Jelena Jankovic.
