AEGON Championships: Nalbandian loses title bid in unique fashion

Argentina’s David Nalbandian lost his bid to win the AEGON Championships title at The Queen’s Club on Sunday after a brief moment of frustration led to an injury of a line judge.

The 10th-seeded Argentinian was leading his opponent, Croatia’s Marin Cilic, 7-6, 3-4 when he kicked an advertising board in frustration. Unfortunately, a piece of the board has hit the line judge and caused a bleeding on his left shin.

“I made a mistake and I apologize. I feel very sorry to the guy. I didn’t want to do that. This is a bad situation for everybody that I really apologize for,” Nalbandian said.

The match was stopped after the incident and it was determined that the win will be awarded to Cilic by default.

“I’m definitely very sorry to finish the tournament like this, especially in the final where we both I think played good tennis,” said Cilic.

“He was playing also some great rallies and in those last two games it was extremely interesting with making two breaks one of each side. So I think it was good tennis today,” he added.

Cilic went home with $100,000 plus 250 ranking points.
