Canadian Milos Raonic finishes opening match after two days with victory

Milos Raonic of Canada progressed to the second round of the 2012 Wimbledon Championships after finally completing his opening round match on Wednesday, beating Colombian Santiago Giraldo  6-4, 6-4, 6-4. The Canadian only needed less than two minutes to close out the match on Wednesday because he was about to serve for the match on Tuesday night before the officials had to halt play due to darkness. He’ll next face Sam Querrey of United States on Thursday.

“I warmed up a bit long this morning. Normally I start matches serving well, so I was not too nervous,” Raonic said.

The 21st-seed produced 20 aces and made 44 winners with only eight unforced errors.

Last year, Raonic hurt his hip during the second round match in Wimbledon which forced him to miss a significant part of last season for surgery. He said that he’s now being more cautious and is checking himself first whenever he slips on grass.

“If I start slipping on the grass now, I stop going for my shots quite as much,” he said.

“That’s the difference between now and last year,” he added.
